The Nigerian Athletics Federation has lost a gem, and there is no two ways about that. Favour Chukwuka Ofili, 22, has ditched Nigeria after accepting Turkey’s sweet and lucrative proposal.
The track and field sprinter competes in 100M, 200m and 4×100 m relays with Nigeria set to lose a talented athlete. The Port Harcourt-born athlete, who has won 5 Gold medals since 2019 for Nigeria in various competitions, including African Youth Games, African Youth Championships, World Athletics U20, and Commonwealth Games.
Favour Ofili’s disagreement with Nigeria commenced when she was not registered in the 100m Women’s event during the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
Ofili once expressed her disappointment when Nigeria Athletics Federation failed to release funds for Nigerian Athletes based inthe USA for preparaations for the 2020 Olympics Gmaes on Tokyo.
These issues, alongside many that have not been able to be solved, led the young runner to consider her future.
Reports say she had lucrative offers from Qatar, which is known for poaching athletes, especially from Kenya.
Favour’s biggest major event for Turkey will be the upcoming 2025 World Athletics Championship to be hosted by Japan.
