And the Beat Goes On and Rock Steady are tracks R&B fans enjoyed in the late 1970s and 1980s after it became a global sensation. The Whispers enjoyed success with these two tracks, earning them number spots in the US charts.
The group was formed in 1963, and the original members included twin brothers Wallace Scotty and Walter Scott. Walter Scott became the 4th member of the R&B, Soul and Disco group to pass away after Marcus Hutson (2000), Gordy Harmon (2003), and Nicholas Caldwell (2016). On Thursday, 26 June, in the North Ridge neighbourhood of Los Angeles, surrounded by his beloved family, Walter Scott died at age 81 after battling cancer for the last 6 months.
Brief History of Walter Scott
Born in Fort Worth, Texas, Walter and Scotty moved to Los Angeles with their family in 1959, where they started singing while attending Jordan High School and in 1964, The Whispers were formed, according to a Sentinel interview with Walter and Scotty in 2017.
A veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces, Walter served as a signaler during the Vietnam War. Upon his return in 1969, he rejoined his brother in The Whispers. Walter recorded for several record companies, including Soul Train Records, Solar Records and Capital Records. In 1980, the group took off and released several gold and platinum hits.
