Sports and Recreation Minister, Kofi Adams, visited Kumasi on Wednesday, 9th July, for an assignment. He was sent by His Excellency John Dramani Mahama to inspect the iconic venue. Kofi Adams was accompanied by the Asanti Regional Minister, Doctor Amoakohene, who both inspected the Kumasi Sports Stadium.

The Sports Minister said, “I want to assure everyone that, in line with President Mahama’s directive, we are committed to ensuring that all sporting activities at the Baba Yara Stadium resume as soon as possible.

“When it comes to football in Ghana, Baba Yara is one of the most cherished grounds. Players often refer to it as the ‘Mecca of Ghana Football.’ And if your Mecca is in poor condition, it should be a source of concern. We’ve come to witness the state of things ourselves, but we believe this is not beyond repair. We are determined to bring the stadium back to the standard it deserves.”

Kofi Adams waxed lyrical about probably the most popular and cherished stadium in Ghana, Baba Yara Sports Stadium, for its iconic status. He compared it to Mecca and assured Ghanaians of massive repairs.

“The primary reason for my visit today is to push for Asante Kotoko and Bibiani Gold Stars to play their CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup matches right here at the Baba Yara Stadium. To make that possible, maintaining and upgrading this facility is absolutely crucial.”

The minister revealed the reason for his visit to Oseikrom. he disclosed that he wants Asante Kotoko and Bibiani Gold Stars to use the venue for the home games in the 2025-26 CAF Confederation Cup and Champions League, respectively.

“There are significant benefits for corporate bodies that support this vision. With two of our top clubs representing Ghana on the continental stage, the Baba Yara Stadium will attract huge attention. By sponsoring the refurbishment, your brand can gain naming rights and be permanently associated with this historic venue”, Adams urged.

The Sports Minister called for businesses to offer their help to help them refurbish the stadium. He assured them of massive benefits if they decided to be part of the refurbishing project.

The Bab Yara Sports Stadium has been the home of Asante Kotoko and the Black Stars for many years, and it will be delightful to have it back as it represents Ghana in football.

The stadium has not been in good shape since CAF declared it not ready to host its competition, soon after the first match of the 2025 AFCON qualifiers, where Ghana lost 1-0 to Angola.
