Manchester City’s talented winger was welcomed ceremoniously at the Kotoko International Airport in Accra, Ghana, for his much-awaited visit. Doku was extremely delighted to have returned home. Fans have been trooping to his home to catch a glimpse of the boy they have been watching in Manchester City’s colours.

“I wanna thank everyone for coming. Football is a gift and talent you get from God, so use it for a useful purpose. I want to thank you guys for coming, and thank you for your support. It’s been 17 years since I came here, so I will try and come every year. Like my dad said, we are going to organise a tournament every year.

“One thing I want to say is that today is my mother’s birthday, so wish her for me.

“Meda mo nyinaa ase. Ne nyinaa nie nti yerebebc bccl kakra,” he said in Twi. It translates to “Thank you to all, that is all. I’m going to play football now” in English.

Doku’s words delighted the gathered fans as he thanked them and also requested them to wish his mother a happy birthday. Doku came to Ghana 16 years ago when he was only 7 and has longed to visit the country of his parents. He was later spotted playing on the Madina pitch with the local boys in a celebration that delighted the entire community.

The 23-year-old Antwerp-born is undoubtedly one of the most dangerous wingers in world football now and wants to give back to the Ghanaian society. Manchester City paid £55 million to French side Renes for his signature in 2023 and has been a threat on the wings of the Citizens as expected.

The youngster on Tuesday also paid a courtesy visit to His Royal Majesty, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, at the Manhyia Palace. Doku with his family were all smiles when they received blessings from the King himself.
