A 28-year-old saleswoman, Sumaiya Amidu, has received a 10-year prison sentence from an Accra Circuit Court for having cocaine hidden in her underwear.

Judge Isaac Addo, who presided over the court, also ordered a fine of GHS120,000. Not paying the fine will lead to an extra three years in prison.

Amidu was apprehended on March 15, 2022, as a result of a focused operation conducted by the Drug Law Enforcement Unit at the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters.

The arrest occurred at a beauty store situated in Abbosey Okai Sabon Zongo, Accra.

The Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Seth Frimpong informed the court that officers found 165 gold foil wraps concealed in her underwear during a body search.

The overall weight of the substance in question was 7.1940 grams. In her statement, Amidu acknowledged that the substance was discovered with her but stated that she was only holding it for someone named Dauda.

She, however, declined to offer additional help in finding him.

A forensic examination later verified that the substance was cocaine.

Following a complete trial, the court determined that Amidu was guilty of illegally possessing narcotic drugs and imposed a prison sentence along with a fine.
