Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has paid a personal visit to President John Dramani Mahama and First Lady Lordina Mahama at the Jubilee House to convey his condolences following the August 6, 2025, military helicopter crash that claimed the lives of eight prominent Ghanaians.

The meeting, which took place on August 8, was described by observers as a symbolic act of statesmanship and national unity in the midst of widespread grief. Kufuor was received by Vice President Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, senior government officials, and presidential aides, who expressed appreciation for his gesture of solidarity.

The tragic crash occurred at Adansi Akrofuom in the Ashanti Region when a Ghana Armed Forces Z-9 helicopter went off radar before going down.

The fatalities included Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Minister for Environment, Science and Technology Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Alhaji Muniru Mohammed, former parliamentary candidate and Deputy NADMO Director General Samuel Aboagye, and NDC Vice Chairman Dr. Samuel Sarpong.

Also on board were three dedicated members of the Ghana Armed Forces — Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manaen Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah — all of whom perished in the line of duty. There were no survivors.

The incident has plunged the country into a period of deep mourning, with the government declaring three days of national remembrance ahead of a state funeral set for August 15, 2025.

Books of condolence have been opened at the Ministries of Defence and Environment, the NDC headquarters, and the Ghana Armed Forces Headquarters for citizens to pay tribute.

Kufuor’s visit follows a series of emotional moments at the Jubilee House, including the First Lady’s tearful breakdown during a wreath-laying ceremony for the victims.

His presence, political analysts say, underscores the need for unity and compassion in the face of a tragedy that has touched every corner of the nation.
