Ghana is still reeling from the devastating helicopter crash that claimed the lives of eight compatriots, a tragedy that has plunged the nation into mourning.

At a time when many expected unity, healing, and a dignified farewell for the fallen, the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) is accusing the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) of politicising the incident.

In a statement, NPP National Organiser Henry Nana Boakye alleged that the Mahama-led administration is using the tragedy to fuel partisan tensions instead of allowing the nation to grieve.

He pointed to the recent arrests of individuals who made public commentary about the crash as evidence of what he described as an “insensitive and divisive” approach.

Among the arrests cited is that of Wontumi TV presenter Akyemkwa Nana Kofi Asare, detained in Ejisu Krapa in what witnesses described as a “Rambo-style” operation by unidentified armed men.

Another is the arrest of social media personality Fante Comedy, linked to a viral TikTok video about the incident.

Both arrests, Boakye said, send a “chilling signal” that politics is being placed above compassion and national solidarity.

The helicopter crash, whose cause remains under investigation, has already sparked concerns over aviation safety and emergency preparedness.

But the political fallout threatens to overshadow the solemnity of the national loss. “This is not the time to inflame tensions. It is time to bind wounds,” Boakye stressed, warning that the government’s actions risk shifting attention from mourning the victims to political confrontation.

The NPP maintains that leadership in moments of national tragedy demands empathy, restraint, and a commitment to protecting democratic freedoms.

Nana Boakye cautioned that Ghana cannot honour the memory of the eight victims while simultaneously creating an atmosphere of fear and intimidation for journalists, social commentators, and ordinary citizens.

“The NDC government must remember that governance in such times requires maturity and humanity,” he said, calling for a halt to actions that could deepen divisions.
