The football world has been shaken by the news that former Crystal Palace defender, Micheal Boateng, has been handed a 14-year prison sentence in the United Kingdom after pleading guilty to drug trafficking.
Micheal Boateng, 34, whose promising career once saw him step onto Premier League turf, admitted in September 2024 to attempting to supply large quantities of Class A drugs, including crystal meth, cocaine, and MDMA.
His conviction came at Croydon Crown Court following a covert operation by the UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA), which uncovered a sophisticated criminal network responsible for distributing illegal substances across London.
From Ghana to the Premier League
Born in Ghana and raised in England, Micheal Boateng’s career began with flashes of potential.
Between 2011 and 2013, he earned a place in Crystal Palace’s senior squad, though he struggled to establish himself as a regular starter. Football analysts at the time described him as a hardworking defender with a bright future, though his professional career later stalled as he moved into the lower tiers of English football.
Like many athletes who fall out of top-flight competition, Micheal Boateng faced the difficult transition of sustaining a career outside the limelight.
