The Ministry of Finance, has taken steps to strengthen its partnership with the United Nations in a bid to accelerate national development and deepen collaboration on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

On Monday, August 18, 2025, the Ministry hosted a strategic engagement in Accra with heads of UN agencies, funds, and programmes operating in the country.

The meeting, which brought together government representatives, UN leaders, and technical experts, was designed to streamline cooperation, eliminate duplication of efforts, and ensure that international support directly complements Ghana’s Medium-Term National Development Policy Framework.

Addressing Coordination Gaps

Ghana has long benefited from technical assistance, policy guidance, and financial support from the UN system.

However, experts have repeatedly warned that fragmented interventions and a lack of structured coordination risk undermining their overall impact.

The Ministry of Finance initiated this latest engagement to bridge those gaps, ensuring that Ghana’s pursuit of resilient and inclusive growth is matched with coordinated international support.

Deputy Minister of Finance, Thomas Nyarko Apem, underscored the importance of the partnership.

“We recognise that the UN System’s support is catalytic, and our partnership signifies the collective commitment we share towards achieving the inclusive national development agenda and the SDGs,” he said.

Shared Priorities and Accountability

During the day-long discussions, participants examined ways to harmonize planning cycles, build stronger accountability systems, and strengthen data-driven programming.

The dialogue emphasized the need for predictable financing and harmonized interventions to avoid overlaps in projects rolled out across the country.

The UN Resident Coordinator in Ghana, Zia Choudhury, praised the initiative and pledged continued collaboration.

“This strategic engagement reflects our unwavering commitment to building stronger, more coordinated partnerships with the Government of Ghana. By aligning our efforts and deepening collaboration, we can accelerate the development agenda and ensure that no one is left behind,” he said.
