Ali’s only offence was acting as a guarantor for a family member who was facing court proceedings for failing to repay a bank loan of Gh¢200,000.
In his attempt to assist a family member who lived far away, he ultimately spent 14 years in prison.
The former inmate stated that he used property documents belonging to his biological brother to obtain bail for the family member in question.
Ali stated that this was intended to prevent the mentioned relative from being convicted.
After being released on bail, the relative attended court three times in a row but subsequently did not return.
His absence from later hearings placed significant pressure on Ali from the prosecutor.
Unfortunately for Ali, after several months of looking, he was unable to find his relative.
Ali stated that he had to accept the consequences. He was sentenced to 15 years in prison, which was later reduced to 14 years after he requested the judge.
During his time in prison, Ali stated that his wife told him she could no longer wait for him and had chosen to move on with her life.
Ali continued that he did not lose his wife to another man alone, but also his business had collapsed completely.
