The family of the late Ghanaian music icon, Charles Kwadwo Fosu, popularly known as Daddy Lumba, has formally notified government of his passing and announced arrangements for the upcoming one-week observation ceremony.

On Monday, August 25, 2025, a delegation comprising the Ekuona Royal Family of Parkoso, the Fosuh Family, and members of the funeral planning committee paid a courtesy visit to the Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, at the Jubilee House.

The delegation was received on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama, in line with Ghanaian tradition, which requires bereaved families to inform government when a national figure of Daddy Lumba’s stature passes away.

The meeting also served to brief government on the one-week commemoration, which has been scheduled for Saturday, August 30, 2025, at the University of Ghana Sports Complex, Legon

Discussions further touched on possible state support to ensure a befitting farewell for the man widely regarded as one of the greatest musicians.

Passing of a National Icon

Daddy Lumba passed away on July 26, 2025, at The Bank Hospital in Cantonments, Accra, at the age of 60.

His death sent shockwaves across the country, with tributes pouring in from political leaders, industry stakeholders, musicians, and millions of fans.

For many Ghanaians, his passing marked the end of an era in the nation’s highlife tradition.

Since news of his death broke, countless admirers have celebrated his profound impact on the cultural and musical identity, describing him as a genius whose artistry blended soulful melodies with sharp social commentary.

A Musical Journey That Defined Generations

Born on September 29, 1964, in Nsuta in the Ashanti Region, Daddy Lumba’s rise to fame began in the 1980s when he teamed up with Nana Acheampong to form the Lumba Brothers.

Their collaboration revolutionised the highlife genre, before he went on to enjoy an illustrious solo career.

Over the span of more than three decades, Lumba released over 30 albums, producing evergreen hits such as Aben Wo Ha, Theresa, Yentie Obiaa, and Playboy.

His songs often touched on love, betrayal, politics, and everyday struggles, earning him a reputation as both an entertainer and a social commentator.

Legacy and National Recognition

Daddy Lumba’s artistry earned him numerous awards and accolades locally and internationally.

He inspired generations of musicians, bridging the gap between traditional highlife and modern Ghanaian music. For many, his influence extended beyond the stage, shaping fashion trends, lifestyle, and even political campaign messages.

With the one-week ceremony now scheduled, expectations are high that government, in collaboration with the family, will put together a state-assisted funeral to honour his memory.

Already, fans across the country are gearing up for what is expected to be a massive celebration of life and music at the University of Ghana Sports Complex.
