Asante Kotoko recorded their first-ever defeat in the Ghana Premier League on Wednesday afternoon at the Crosby Awuah Memorial Stadium in Nzema.

Holy Stars looked like they were in trouble ahead of the postponed fixture after their head coach, Evans Augustine Adotey, resigned from his duty as the head coach due to unwanted results leading to immense pressure.

Johnson Smith took charge of the team for the visit of Asante Kotoko and showed his experience by calming things down for the struggling Holy Stars.

Asante Kotoko has recently not hit top form after inconsistencies, even though they remained the unbeaten side in the Premier League.

After an intense goalless draw in the first half, the home side took the lead with just four minutes played in the second half. The goal was not surprising because the Porcupine Warriors had looked vulnerable after constant pressing from the Holy Stars’ forward.

Kwame Poku’s strike four minutes later levelled matters for Karim Zito’s side.

With two minutes played into the additional minutes after the 90, Prince Tweneboah scored the all-important goal for Holy Stars to record an incredible 2-1 win over Asante Kotoko.

Holy Stars remain in the relegation zone but are just two points outside the danger zone. With fixtures against Nations FC, Aduana Stars, Samartex, Medeama and Hohoe United to follow, Holy Stars now need to stay focused to win some points in their bid to avoid relegation.

Asante Kotoko, on the other hand, sits in 4th position, having won 20 points from a possible 33. The Porcupine Warriors are three points behind league leaders Aduana Stars.

Asante Kotoko will welcome Medeama to the Baba Yara Sports Stadium on Sunday and must be fully prepared to face the Mauve and Yellow, who are considered one of the contenders for the league title.
