President John Dramani Mahama has announced that he will appoint a substantive Minister for Defence in 2026, saying the vacancies will be filled after the Christmas and New Year holidays.

President Mahama made the commitment during a courtesy call with Muslim leaders at the Jubilee House, where he explained that the government will not rush replacements following the tragic helicopter crash that claimed two ministers earlier in the year.

The decision to delay appointments until next year reflects a deliberate pause to observe the holiday period and to allow for careful selection.

This timeline gives the presidency time to consult stakeholders and vet potential candidates before forwarding names to Parliament for approval.

The context for the announcement is the August helicopter crash that left the Defence and Environment portfolios vacant, creating an immediate need for leadership in areas tied to national security and environmental management.

Who were the Defence and Environmental Ministers?

Edward Omane Boamah became President John Mahama’s defence minister earlier this year, shortly after Mahama’s swearing-in in January.

Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed was serving as the minister of environment, science and technology.

Both tragically lost their lives in the unfortunate helicopter crash that killed eight on 6th August 2025.
