Crystal Palace forward Eddie Nketiah is on the brink of a defining career decision as he is switching from England to represent the country of his heritage, Ghana.
Eddie Keddar Nketiah, 27, was born and raised in Greater London, England, to Ghanaian parents, a dual identity that has quietly shaped his footballing journey from the very beginning.
Groomed through the academies of two of English football’s biggest institutions, Chelsea and Arsenal, Nketiah rose steadily through the ranks, wearing the Three Lions shirt at U18, U19, U20 and U21 level.
Across those age groups, he amassed 38 appearances and an eye-catching 35 goals: a scoring rate that marked him out as one of England’s most prolific young forwards.
That prolific run did not go unnoticed. On 13 January 2023, Nketiah was belatedly honoured for his remarkable exploits, receiving a commemorative golden boot from his former coach Michael Johnson in recognition of his status as England U21S’ record goal scorer, a title that speaks to the sheer weight of his contribution at youth level.
Yet for all that promise, senior recognition proved fleeting. Nketiah’s sole outing for the England national team came in October 2023, in a friendly at Wembley that England edged 1-0 against Australia.
Ollie Watkins settled the contest with a decisive strike in the 57th minute, and it was Watkins himself who made way for Nketiah, introduced as a substitute in the 73rd minute.
That solitary cameo remains, to this day, the only senior international experience of his career.
Now, with his path into the England setup seemingly blocked, the striker appears ready to embrace an opportunity that has been on the table for the better part of six years.
Ghanaian football authorities have long courted Nketiah, persistent in their belief that his sharp instincts in front of goal could bolster the Black Stars’ attacking options.
Versatile enough to operate across all three forward positions, he offers a rare blend of mobility and finishing that makes him an attractive addition to any frontline.
