Four things to look out for as Kotoko host Hearts of Lions, Hearts of Oak travel to Bibiani with Ashgold welcoming Vision.
1. Ashgold returns to Obuasi
Ashgold will kick off week 2 with a home fixture against the much-confident Vision at the Len Clay Sports Stadium on Saturday afternoon in Obuasi. Abdul-Karim Zito’s Ashgold commenced the season with a 1-1 draw at Port City and will look forward to securing their first three points of the season. Vision, on the other hand, are sitting on top of the league log after smashing Young Apostles 3-0 into pieces. Obuasi will be buzzing with the return of the Ghana Premier League.
2. Asante Kotoko welcome bogey side Heart of Lions to Oseikrom
Asante Kotoko, after the entertaining 2-2 draw at newly promoted side Debibi United, will welcome bogey side Heart of Lions to Baba Yaya Sports Stadium in Oseikrom. It is 11 years and five months since Asante Kotoko defeated Heart of Lions 4-0, which happens to be the club’s last victory over the Kpando-based club in the GPL.
Ahmed Toure, Prince Baffour, Amadou Latif and Emmanuel Asante were the four different scorers for Asante Kotoko 11 years ago. Lions have won five and drawn three since then. The Porcupine Warriors will have to be psychologically impeccable to break down their perennial bogey side.
3. Will Hearts of Oak conquer Bibiani?
It was a fantastic debut for head coach Nebojsa Kapor. It was a fantastic debut for the veteran striker John Antwi. It was a fantastic debut for Ivorian forward Kader Kourouma. The opening day at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium was so perfect that Accra Hearts of Oak pulvirised Berekum Chelsea 4-0, with the experienced striker John Antwi scoring twice in the first half. This is the form the Accra-based club is travelling to Bibiani in. Will they continue it at last season’s runner-up’s den? Gold Stars of Bibiani is a different side whenever they are playing at home. Gold Stars lost 1-0 to Dalvin Yeboah’s sole strike at Bechem United on matchday one and will quickly look to bounce back to winning ways, especially in front of their loyal fans.
4. Can Dormaa-Ahenkro be a fortress once again for Aduana?
The Ogya boys have relied on their home grounds for points in all the years they have spent in the top flight. The Dormaa-Ahenkro-based club’s success depends on how they will perform at home. With Samuel Boadu in charge as the head coach, the experienced gaffer is expected to help the club challenge for the league title. Their chances will depend heavily on how they will fare at home. With a goalless draw away against Heart of Lions on matchday one, Aduana will welcome Samartex and a win will be great for them. Samartex, on the other hand, won 3-1 at the Nsenkyire Park in Samraboi against Karela on the opening day. In the four GPL games played between the two clubs at Dormaa-Ahenkro, Samartex has won two and drawn two, with Aduana yet to record a single victory over the Timber giants.
