Akwasi Agyeman, the former Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), has announced that he is stepping away from public service permanently, signalling the end of an eight-year tenure that shaped the tourism landscape.
Speaking in an interview with George Quaye on Joy Prime’s PrimeTime, Akwasi Agyeman emphasized that his decision is firm and independent of political developments, including the potential return of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to power.
“I’m not coming back to the GTA. I have served my term eight years and I believe it is time for others to also gain the experience,” Agyeman stated. He stressed that his departure is part of a personal transition rather than a political statement.
During his years at the helm of the GTA, Agyeman oversaw initiatives that enhanced Ghana’s visibility as a cultural and tourism hub.
He highlighted the recently concluded African Week in the United Kingdom, organized as part of Black History Month in October, as one of the final major projects under his leadership—a symbolic closure to his public service journey.
Looking forward, Akwasi Agyeman revealed he has shifted his focus to private ventures and international projects.
He has established a Centre for Tourism, Hospitality, and Aviation, which officially launched last year, and has embarked on additional initiatives beyond Ghana’s borders.
“I have started a major project and have other ventures in different countries that demand my full attention,” he said, noting that these represent the next stage of his professional life.
Reflecting on the legacy of his tenure, Akwasi Agyeman expressed confidence in the future of the GTA and the wider tourism sector under new leadership.
“Honestly, I’m done with public service. I think it’s time for some other people to also experience and contribute,” he said, adding that fresh perspectives will continue to drive growth in Ghana’s tourism industry.
