The NPP’s defeat in the 2024 General Elections was catastrophic. People are yet to believe that the ruling party only got 38% of the total votes cast.
The NPP, led by ex-president Nana Akufo-Addo, ruled for eight years and was optimistic of continuing, but Ghanaians were extremely angry with how things were happening.
Former leader of the NPP, who was the president of Ghana between 2001 and 200,8, once revealed that he had been sidelined by the decision makers of the party led by Akufu-Addo. His revelation was shocking when Bryan Acheampong visited him at his home.
In an interview with Delay, former president of Ghana, John Agyekum Kufuor expressed his worry in the party and blamed Akufu-Addo as one of the main reasons the party lost disastrously.
“I will be honest with you, I didn’t understand the leadership of Akufo-Addo most precisely after COVID-19. He’s one of the reasons we lost the 2024 elections,” Kufuor said. Ghanaians were paying the COVID tax even when the deadly disease was well over until the NDC came to power and abolished it.
“They never consulted me when taking those decisions. I even believed the cathedral would be privately funded, only to realise state funds were involved,” he added. Party decisions have been made in recent years by party members who are much closer to Akufu-Addo, much to the annoyance of Kufuor and some NPP gurus.
“It’s difficult to fathom the DDEP, National Cathedral, and PDS sagas. You cannot take the Ghana electorate for GRANTED,” Kufuor concluded.
Ghanaian electorates taught the NPP a huge lesson by massively voting against them during the 2024 General Election.
The next on the party’s bill is to elect the flagbearer for the 2028 General Elections. Bryan Acheampong, Kennedy Agyapong, Mahamudu Bawumia, Osei Adutwum and Kwabena Agyapong are due to contest for the coveted seat in January 2026.
