Some Ghanaians, especially NDC fanatics, have been calling for President John Dramani Mahama to go for a third term because they think he is the man for the resetting of the country.

Contrary to their opinion, the Ghanaian Constitution opposes any form of a third term for any president.

Past presidents have enjoyed two terms since the country decided to practice democracy.

On Tuesday, 9th December, on Channel One TV, the minister in charge of Government Communication, Felix Ofosu Kwakye, poured cold water on the rumours that His Excellency John Dramani Mahama is planning to amend the constitution and vie for a third term.

“The NPP have whipped itself into needless frenzy. President Mahama has stated emphatically that he will respect the Ghanaian Constitution. Because he’s a consummate democrat, so there’s no third term anywhere for him or any other person as far as the constitution is concerned, Ofosu Kwakye said. He criticised the opposition NPP for spreading false information to Ghanaians about something the president knows nothing about.

He continued, “Anyone can say what they want. The fact that some people have gone on Facebook to say he should go for a third term doesn’t mean that will happen. The man himself has said he’s not interested.” John Mahama has disclosed that he will respect the constitution, hence will not dare go for a third term

“So NPP should stop wasting their time and everybody’s time, and purporting to be angry. It’s an absurd fantasy they’re getting themselves into. The President has not expressed any intent. Any talk about it is a complete waste of everybody’s time,” he added.

John Mahama, in his first term, ruled between 2012 and 2016 before losing to Akufu-Addo, who enjoyed an indifferent two terms.

The current president in the 2024 Elections defeated Bawumia and made history as the first man to return to the presidency after being voted out. His second term will end in December 2028.
