Ghana–Canada partnership opens new leadership pathways for young politicians

A new partnership between the NPP Loyal Ladies (NPP LL) and the Young Politicians of Canada (YPC) is creating a platform for emerging political leaders from Ghana and Canada to connect, exchange ideas and develop relationships that could shape their leadership journeys.

The initiative is focused on leadership development, mentorship, knowledge sharing and networking, with particular attention to creating opportunities for young people and young women to participate in international political conversations.

For the NPP Loyal Ladies, the partnership represents an extension of its efforts to develop the leadership potential of its members and expose young women to opportunities beyond Ghana’s political environment.

The collaboration is also built around the idea that young people should not be treated simply as future leaders. Instead, they should be given opportunities to participate in leadership, public service and policy discussions in the present.

Building bridges beyond borders

Through the Ghana–Canada exchange, emerging political leaders are expected to share experiences on youth participation, political leadership, public service, community engagement and the challenges confronting young people seeking to enter politics.

The partnership is designed as a two-way exchange, with participants from both countries expected to share lessons from their respective political and social environments.

The objective, therefore, is not simply for Ghanaian participants to learn from their Canadian counterparts, but also for Canadian young political leaders to gain perspectives from Ghana’s political and community experiences.

Such an approach could provide participants with opportunities to examine different approaches to political participation while building professional and personal networks across national boundaries.

First dialogue scheduled for November

The first major activity under the partnership is the Ghana–Canada Young Political Leaders Dialogue, scheduled for November 4, 2026.

The 90-minute virtual pilot programme will bring together selected emerging political leaders from Ghana and Canada for discussions on youth participation, leadership, the role of young women in politics and the development of international political networks.

The virtual dialogue is expected to serve as the starting point for a broader programme of engagement between the two groups.

Plans for the partnership include continued virtual conversations, mentorship opportunities, physical dialogues and reciprocal visits between Ghana and Canada.

Creating opportunities for young leaders

The initiative comes against a broader challenge facing political organisations: maintaining meaningful engagement with younger generations at a time when some young people feel disconnected from traditional political structures.

The organisers believe that participation should go beyond inviting young people to political events.

Young leaders also require access to mentors, professional networks, leadership skills, international exposure and platforms where their views can contribute to political and policy discussions.

The Ghana–Canada partnership is intended to provide some of those opportunities by connecting emerging leaders with peers operating in a different political environment.
