The Ghana Police Service has arrested seven suspects in connection with a highway robbery that occurred last year along the Tamale–Buipe highway, during which a member of the Council of State was attacked.

The suspects — Rashida Yussif, Aaron Abaana, Wilson Abasong, Muntaru Iddrisu, Aminu Zibrilla, Innusa Sumaila and Haruna Safianu — were picked up on January 11, 2026, following weeks of intelligence-led investigations.

Briefing journalists at the Police Headquarters in Accra on Thursday, January 29, the Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), COP Lydia Yaako Donkor, said the robbery took place on July 21, 2025.

According to her, the victim was travelling along the Tamale–Buipe highway when six armed men ambushed him and made away with several personal items, including mobile phones, cash, wristwatches, laptops, reading glasses and other valuables.

“The arrests form part of sustained intelligence operations to dismantle highway robbery networks across the country,” COP Donkor stated, adding that investigations are still ongoing to retrieve stolen items and identify other accomplices.

Five More Arrested in Ahafo Region Robbery

In a separate operation, police also arrested five suspects in connection with another robbery incident at Nkasei in the Ahafo Region.

The suspects — Muta Kofi, Mahamadu Sajoe, also known as Salifu, Shaibu Issah, Abdul Suleman and Bukari Sule, popularly called Taylor — were arrested on different dates following investigations into a December 2, 2025 attack.

COP Donkor explained that the group, together with other accomplices still at large, allegedly blocked the Goaso–Tepa road while armed and robbed unsuspecting road users.

She assured the public that police efforts to curb highway crime have been intensified nationwide and urged travellers to remain vigilant and prioritise personal safety.
