Hope is finally rising for traders and residents of Kumasi as government prepares to bring the long-neglected Krofrom Market project back to life, with completion now targeted for the end of 2026.

Launched in 2007 but abandoned for more than ten years, the unfinished market has stood as a symbol of stalled development, forcing hundreds of traders to operate in congested and unsafe conditions.

The Chief Executive of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), Richard Ofori Agyemang Boadi, says renewed commitment from government has set the stage for the project’s revival.

In an interview on Nhyira FM’s Kro Yi Mu Nsem, he disclosed that official procurement processes have begun and additional funding has been secured to ensure the project moves forward without further interruptions.

“We’ve received the green light through a procurement alert, and the budget has been adjusted upward to reflect current costs,” he explained.

According to the Mayor, a long-running legal dispute with the project’s consultant — one of the major obstacles that halted construction — is also being resolved, clearing the path for contractors to return to site.

Once these processes are concluded, work is expected to resume fully, with the goal of delivering a modern, fully operational market by the close of 2026.

Mr. Agyemang Boadi also addressed the stalled Kejetia Phase II project, blaming the delay on unpaid government obligations to the contractor.

He expressed optimism that funds will be released by March 2026 to allow construction to continue.

“The moment the outstanding payments are settled, work will resume immediately,” he assured.

The KMA Chief Executive believes the completion of both market projects will significantly ease congestion in the city, improve trading conditions, and stimulate economic activity across Kumasi.
