The Ashanti South Regional Police Command has apprehended a suspect for illegally possessing 713 slabs of materials believed to be narcotic drugs during an operation in Asanso Bekwai, located in the Ashanti Region.
Atampugri Akanyani, the driver of the vehicle, was arrested on January 26, 2026, when a police team conducting a routine check stopped a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter bus with the registration number AC 718-25 at the Asanso checkpoint.
An inspection of the vehicle revealed nine nylon bags filled with dried leaves believed to be illegal drugs hidden inside the bus.
A police report stated that the bags were opened, uncovering 713 compressed slabs of dried leaves believed to be illegal drugs.

“During the arrest, the suspect allegedly attempted to bribe the officers with an amount of GH¢150,000.00, which was declined,” part of the report read.
“The suspect is currently in police custody assisting investigations, as efforts continue to trace the source of the suspected narcotic drugs and identify other persons connected to the offence,” it revealed.
The suspect is currently in police custody, where investigations are ongoing.
