Former Manchester United skipper Roy Keane has reiterated his stance that Michael Carrick should not be given a permanent managerial position at Manchester United.
The Red Devils, through Casemiro, Cunha and Sesko, defeated Unai Emery’s Aston Villa 3-1 on Sunday afternoon at Old Trafford to extend their lead over their Villa, Chelsea and Liverpool in the race for the top 4.
Speaking on Sky Sports after Manchester United’s victory, Roy Keane said, “I take my hat off to him, but there are far better options out there. There is no jeopardy or pressure at all on him at the moment.
“They finished 15th last year, so expectations are so low. Everyone gets carried away with being third. Well, I’m not. Everyone else can get giddy. I don’t get all excited. I get excited when teams are winning trophies.
“If you’d have mentioned him three months ago [as a permanent manager], you’d have been locked up.
“I played under Brian Clough. Has Carrick got that sort of respect? Is he bringing a CV where we can say ‘now we’re going places’? The answer is no.
“Do I see United winning league titles with Carrick? The answer is no. United have to interview people and see what’s out there. There are definitely better options out there.
“People are saying the players love him, but most players love a caretaker manager. He’s not had any distractions. He couldn’t beat Newcastle with 10 men and Villa today were shocking, Keane concluded”
Michael Carrick seems to have won the hearts and support of many Manchester United fans after completely turning the club’s fortunes around since replacing Ruben Amorim, whose reign was full of disaster.
It looks certain that the club will finish in the UCL slots with plans for next season underway. The club hierarchy is in the market for a new manager, with Carrick among the favourites to land the job.
