After a disappointing period under Álvaro Arbeloa, who replaced Xabi Alonso in early 2026, the club is set to finish a second consecutive season without a major trophy.
Reports from The Athletic suggest that Pérez views “The Special One” as the only figure capable of resetting the club’s winning mentality and managing the high-profile egos in the current dressing room.
Currently managing SL Benfica, Mourinho is under contract until June 2027 but reportedly has a relatively low release clause of approximately €3 million.
While Benfica’s leadership has publicly expressed confidence that he will stay for the 2026/27 season, the Portuguese manager has set a personal deadline of 24 May 2026 to resolve his future.
