Member of Parliament for Akuapem North and former National Organiser of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Sammi Awuku, has been appointed Co-Chair of the party’s newly constituted Youth Development Committee as part of a major restructuring exercise aimed at repositioning the party after the 2024 general elections.

The appointment was announced following a meeting of the party’s National Executive Committee and National Council held on Thursday, May 7, 2026, where the NPP officially reconstituted its Standing and Sector Committees to strengthen internal organization, policy coordination, and grassroots mobilization.

Sammi Awuku will serve alongside Vincent Ekow Assafuah, the Member of Parliament for Old Tafo, as Co-Chair of the Youth Development Committee.

Agya Yaw Nsiah was named spokesperson for the committee, while Vanessa Otuo-Acheampong will serve as Secretary.

The latest appointment further cements Sammi Awuku’s longstanding influence within the youth wing of the NPP and reflects the party’s continued reliance on experienced organizers to reconnect with the grassroots, especially the youth population, following the party’s transition into opposition.

For more than a decade, Sammi Awuku has remained one of the most recognizable youth political figures within the NPP.

He rose through the party’s youth structures, first gaining prominence as a student activist and communicator before eventually becoming National Youth Organizer of the party.

During his tenure, he became widely known for spearheading youth mobilization campaigns, electoral outreach programmes, and grassroots political engagement activities across the country.

His role became particularly prominent during the NPP’s campaigns leading into the 2016 and 2020 general elections, where he played a central role in mobilizing young voters and coordinating campaign structures nationwide.

His close association with youth empowerment initiatives and political activism helped elevate his profile within the party hierarchy.

Following the NPP’s victory in the 2016 elections, Sammi Awuku was appointed Director-General of the National Lottery Authority (NLA), where he led several reforms aimed at digitizing lottery operations and expanding revenue mobilization.

During his time at the NLA, he frequently championed technological innovation and regulatory reforms within the gaming sector, while also positioning the authority as a major contributor to state revenue generation.

In 2024, he successfully contested and won the Akuapem North parliamentary seat on the ticket of the NPP, further strengthening his political career beyond party organization into parliamentary leadership.

Since entering Parliament, he has remained active in national political discourse and internal party engagements, especially on issues relating to youth participation, governance, entrepreneurship, and political strategy.

Political observers say his latest appointment signals the NPP’s intention to rely on experienced mobilizers with strong grassroots appeal as the party seeks to reorganize after losing power in the 2024 elections.

The formation of the Youth Development Committee is expected to play a central role in rebuilding support among young voters, who remain a critical voting bloc in the electoral politics.

The committee is expected to coordinate youth-focused policy proposals, political education programmes, grassroots engagement strategies, and advocacy initiatives to expand the party’s appeal among students, first-time voters, young professionals, and unemployed youth across the country.

The NPP’s reorganisation exercise also comes at a time when several leading figures within the party are positioning themselves ahead of expected internal contests and broader strategic preparations for the 2028 general elections.
