Jerome Opoku impressed Ghanaians with his strength and calmness in the 1-0 win over Panama in Ghana’s opening game at the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup. Opoku, alongside Jonas Adjetey, made Ghanaians forget the absence of first-choice centre-backs Mohammed Salisu and Alexander Djiku.
The duo kept Panama’s attack quiet and never looked shaky in their first partnership in a competitive game for the Black Stars.
Ghana will face England on Tuesday in the USA, with preparations underway. When the towering Basaksehir centre-back, Opoku, was asked about his view on the England national team, the 27-year-old London-born praised the Three Lions’ quality but warned that Ghana also has great quality to face Tuchel’s side.
βWe know England have got good players, but we have great qualities too.β
In their opening game of the World Cup, England defeated Croatia 4-2 with stars like Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham, Declan Rice, Reece James, Marcus Rashford and Anderson Elliot all shining.
The centre back revealed that Ghana will not face England with the mentality for a drawn game but rather a win. βI heard people saying that since we beat Panama, we only need a draw against England, and for me I donβt think that way. Every match is to win.β
England will face Ghana in a game where whoever wins will book an automatic slot to the knockout stage.
