Mexico ended a 40-year World Cup knockout drought with a commanding 2-0 win over Ecuador at the Azteca Stadium, sending the co-hosts into the last 16 to face either England or DR Congo.

Kick-off was delayed by an hour after severe thunderstorms swept across Mexico City, but once play got underway, the home side wasted little time settling into their stride. Javier Aguirre’s men pressed high from the first whistle, overwhelming Ecuador with intensity and slick movement in front of a deafening Azteca crowd.

Julian Quinones broke the deadlock in the 22nd minute, receiving the ball from Roberto Alvarado before driving through the Ecuadorian defence and finishing powerfully into the net. Mexico doubled their advantage nine minutes later when Quinones turned provider, setting up Raul Jimenez, who found the top corner with a composed finish to punish some sloppy defending from the visitors.

Ecuador, appearing in the knockout stage for the first time in 20 years, struggled to respond after the break and could not find a way past a well-organised Mexican defence. Their frustration boiled over deep into stoppage time when Arsenal defender Piero Hincapie was shown a straight red card following a confrontation with Mexico substitute Santiago Gimenez, ending a miserable night for the South Americans.

The victory marks Mexico’s first World Cup knockout-stage win since 1986, the last time the country hosted the tournament, and extends their unbeaten run at the Azteca to ten World Cup matches. The co-hosts were one of only three teams, alongside France and Argentina, to win all three group games.

Seventeen-year-old Gilberto Mora started the match, becoming the second-youngest player to start a World Cup knockout game, behind only Brazilian legend Pele in 1958.

Mexico will now await the winner of England’s Round of 32 clash with DR Congo, with a mouth-watering last-16 tie at the Azteca on the cards should England progress.
