When your president praises you, it means you’re definitely impressing him. This is how Okudzeto Samuel Ablakwa has caught the attention of His Excellency John Dramani Mahama.

Speaking during the Resetting Ghana Tour of the Volta Region on Thursday, July 16, President Mahama waxed lyrical about the North Tongu MP for playing a key role in advancing Ghana’s interests on the international stage.

“Ablakwa is among my hardest-working Ministers. Every credit I have attained on the international scene, it is he that has done the leg work.”

“Your Member of Parliament, our hardworking Minister of Foreign Affairs, indeed, I must tell you that he is among my hardest-working ministers. Every credit that I have attained on the international scene, it is he that has done the legwork.

“The UN Resolution on Reparations, it is he who did the travelling to convince all the 123 countries to vote for us,” President Mahama said.

President John Dramani Mahama’s description of Okudzeto Ablakwa as one of the hardworking members of his government reflects the trust reposed in the 45-year-old legislator since his appointment as Foreign Affairs Minister in 2025.

Ablakwa is no stranger to the corridors of power, having represented the North Tongu constituency in Parliament since 2013.

His journey through Ghana’s political landscape has been marked by consistency and dedication, qualities that appear to have shaped President Mahama’s confidence in handing him one of the most sensitive portfolios in government.

Ablakwa’s rise to the Foreign Affairs Ministry did not happen overnight. He cut his teeth in government during the administration of the late President John Evans Atta Mills, where he served as Deputy Minister for Information and later Deputy Minister for Education.

These formative years in public service equipped him with the administrative experience and political acumen that would later define his approach to Ghana’s international relations.

His steady climb through these roles speaks to a career built on diligence rather than shortcuts, reinforcing why President Mahama now counts him among his most reliable ministers.

Since taking charge of Ghana’s foreign affairs, Ablakwa has been at the forefront of the country’s diplomatic engagements with other nations. Among his notable achievements is his leadership in coordinating the homecoming of stranded Ghanaians in South Africa, who were affected by xenophobic attacks.

This intervention demonstrated not only his diplomatic skill but also his commitment to the welfare of Ghanaians abroad, further cementing his reputation as a minister who works tirelessly in the service of the nation.
