A 13-year-old boy died, and three other people were seriously injured in Ciudad Rodrigo, a walled medieval town in Spain’s Salamanca province, when part of a fountain collapsed during celebrations of Spain’s World Cup victory.
The tragedy unfolded shortly after midnight on Monday, hours after Spain beat Argentina 1-0 in the final, sealed with a goal from Ferran Torres, to win the country’s second World Cup title.
Hundreds of residents had gathered at the Árbol Gordo fountain in the town centre, and the upper part of the structure gave way after numerous people climbed onto it to celebrate, falling onto several people below.
The 13-year-old was treated at the local health centre but later died; another youth suffered a suspected broken leg and was among the injured.
Castilla y León’s emergency services said they received their first alert around 00:33, prompting a response from local police, the Civil Guard, the provincial fire brigade, and medical crews.
Ciudad Rodrigo’s town hall expressed condolences to the victim’s family and friends, saying what was meant to be a celebration of the national team’s win “has turned into a tragedy.”
The World Cup final was hosted by the United States at New York New Jersey Stadium, and Spain’s victory triggered mass celebrations across the country, of which the gathering in Ciudad Rodrigo was one.
