The Ghana Police Service has restored calm at Nchiraa in the Wenchi Municipality of the Bono Region following violent disturbances that erupted after the community’s Yam Festival celebration on Saturday, October 3, 2026.

The incident left two people dead and 14 others injured, with the injured including a police officer who sustained gunshot wounds. The victims are currently receiving medical treatment.

According to the Bono Regional Police Command, the disturbances occurred at the Four Junction in Nchiraa at about 5:30 p.m., shortly after the Yam Festival programme had ended.

Preliminary investigations indicate that trouble broke out while Nana Tabiri Yaw II and his sub-chiefs were being escorted to the palace, during which a gunshot was heard.

The circumstances leading to the shooting and the identities of those responsible remain under investigation.

The bodies of the two deceased persons have been deposited at the Wenchi Methodist Hospital mortuary for preservation and autopsy.

Following the incident, the Wenchi Divisional Police intensified patrols within Nchiraa to prevent further disturbances and restore public confidence.

The Police said the situation in the community is currently calm, while investigations continue to establish the full circumstances surrounding the violence.

The Bono Regional Police Command has assured residents that every effort is being made to identify and arrest persons involved in the disturbances.

The Police appealed to residents and members of the public to remain calm and cooperate with investigators as efforts continue to bring those responsible to justice.
