President John Dramani Mahama has outlined plans to bring back Ghana’s national airline, saying Boeing is working with the country on preparations that include aircraft advice and training for engineers and pilots.

Speaking during his recent UK visit, Mahama said work was progressing towards establishing the carrier and expressed confidence that Ghana would have a national airline operating before he leaves office.

Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has since identified 2027 as the President’s target, giving Ghanaians abroad a timeframe to watch.

Boeing’s involvement goes beyond aircraft

According to Mahama’s reported remarks, Boeing met the Ghanaian delegation during his visit to the United Nations General Assembly.

He described cooperation covering the airline’s establishment, advice on aircraft and the training of technical staff.

That is an important part of the announcement. A successful airline needs more than planes: it needs trained crews, maintenance expertise, sound management and the ability to keep services running.

However, the President’s remarks should not be treated as confirmation of a completed aircraft purchase or Boeing taking an ownership stake. The precise commercial arrangements have not been fully announced.

London features in the discussions

Mahama also discussed the national airline’s revival with UK lawmakers. GhanaWeb reported that the discussions included encouraging more airlines to operate between Accra and London.

For UK-based Ghanaians, the interest is immediate. Another airline could mean more choice when travelling for holidays, business, family occasions or an unexpected emergency.

Passengers will want to know about ticket prices, baggage allowances, departure times and reliable service. A new carrier could increase competition, although lower fares cannot be guaranteed.

A London service would attract considerable attention, but a timetable for the proposed airline has yet to be confirmed.

Ablakwa points to 2027

Addressing Ghanaians in Ottawa on Sunday 25 October, Ablakwa said the technical committee working on the project had submitted its report.

He highlighted a direct Ghana–Canada connection as a priority and said the President was targeting next year for the airline’s return. That remains a target rather than a confirmed first-flight date.

Will the Ghana Airways name return?

Mahama indicated that the final name had not been decided. He used “Ghana Airways” when discussing the project as a reference to the former national carrier.

Whatever name is chosen, the government has previously proposed a structure led by the private sector, with the state holding a minority stake. Transport Minister Joseph Bukari Nikpe said the intention was to support professional management and avoid problems experienced by previous national airlines.

From announcement to departure

The next milestones will be confirmation of the operating partner, funding, aircraft, routes and launch date.

For Ghanaians abroad, seeing a national carrier return would carry a sense of pride. Turning that interest into bookings will depend on the service: competitive fares, clear baggage rules, helpful staff and flights passengers can trust.

The ambition has been stated. Travellers will now be watching for the details that turn it into a journey they can book.
