The Danes announced their presence in a grand style after failing to qualify for the last two Olympic Games.

African Champions Angola was beaten 34-31 by the impressive Netherlands.

South Korea narrowly defeated Germany 23-22 while Brazil proved to be better than Spain after brushing the Europeans aside by 29-18.

Host and defending champions, France, started their title defence with a win over Hungary. The French won 31-28.
