Day 2 review

Lyle Foster’s delightful effort was enough to help South Africa defeat Angola 2-1 in Marrakech. Oswin Appollis’ well-composed strike was cancelled by Show’s 35th-minute goal. The first half ended 1-1 with both teams having the opportunity to carry the day.

Burnley’s striker Foster settled the contest in the 79th minute. Bafana Bafana’s 2-1 win will be a morale booster in their bid to stay long in Morocco.

Mohamed Salah’s winning goal in additional time helped the Pharaohs of Egypt beat Zimbabwe 2-1. Omar Marmoush’s individual effort in the second half cancelled Prince Dube’s 20th-minute opener for Zimbabwe. Salah’s effort broke the hearts of Zimbabwe after defending so well.

Patson Daka’s header cancelled Lassina Sinayoko’s goal for Mali. Zambia struggled throughout the game but ultimately laughed last.

Day 3 preview

D.R. Congo will open their campaign with a tough fixture against Benin in Rabat at the Al Barid Stadium. Sebastien Desabre’s Leopard will want to continue from where they ended during the play-off for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Benin must play above their recent performances to stand any chance of beating D.R. Congo.

Senegal, one of the much-fancied sides, will meet Botswana in their opening game of the tournament. The West Africans with Mane, Jackson and Ndiaye in attack will pose a much greater threat to their opponents in Tanger.

The Super Eagles of Nigeria, after failing to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, would want to appease the over 200 million fans with their fourth AFCON trophy. Eric Chelle’s side wants a good start to boost their confidence and will disturb Tanzania. The East Africans are not in any fine form ahead of the tournament, but can not be written off.

Tunisia and Uganda will wrap up the day with a huge fixture in Rabat. The North Africans are in sumptuous form, having qualified for the World Cup unbeaten. Uganda have lost al the three games they have played against Tunisia in their history and will be eager to end that horrible record.
