Morocco’s incredible quest for an Olympic Gold medal was ended by the impressive Spain who beat the North Africans 2-1.

Top scorer Soufian Rahimi scored his 6th goal of the competition after putting Morocco ahead in the 37th minute via the spot kick. Morocco went to the break leading.

In the second half, Fermin Lopez equalised in the 66th minute. Spain grabbed the winner in the 85th minute through Seville’s 20-year-old Juanlu Sanchez.

In the other semi-finals, France defeated Egypt 3-1 after 1-1 in the regular time. Pyramids’ Mahmoud Saber’s 62nd minute opener helped Egypt take the lead. In-form Jean Phillipe Mateta scored with just 7 minutes to end the game to level the scoreline.

The game entered extra time with Egypt’s Omar Fayed being sent off with just two minutes played.

The host took advantage of Egypt’s 10 men with Mateta putting them in front in 99th minute. Michael Oliseh rounded off the night for France
with 108th minute goal to make the scorline 3-1 in favour of France.

The host will meet Spain to battle for gold whilst the two North Africans, Morocco and Egypt will square off for bronze.
