Inaki Williams was once again the difference-maker for Athletic Bilbao against Real Sociedad, scoring in a 2-1 victory in Sunday’s Basque derby at the Estadio San Mames.

The former Ghana international opened the scoring after just 14 minutes, finishing off a superb assist from his younger brother Nico Williams to give the home supporters an early reason to celebrate.

Real Sociedad responded in the 30th minute when Croatian midfielder Luka Sucic found the net to bring the contest level and silence the home crowd.

But Athletic Bilbao restored their advantage just before half-time, with winger Alex Berenguer calmly converting a penalty to put the hosts back in front.

That proved enough to secure the three points in a fiercely contested encounter between the two Basque rivals.

For Williams, however, the goal was about more than simply helping his side to victory. It was another reminder of his remarkable scoring record against one of Athletic Bilbao’s biggest rivals.

The 32-year-old has now scored eight goals in 25 appearances against Real Sociedad, making them the team he has scored against most throughout his career.

His latest effort also moved him into second place among the leading goalscorers in Basque derbies in the 21st century.

Real Sociedad forward Mikel Oyarzabal remains top of the list with nine goals, just one ahead of Williams, who has eight.

Former Sociedad striker Nihat occupies third place with seven goals, while former Athletic Bilbao captain Iker Muniain has scored six.

Club legends Aritz Aduriz and Tiko complete the top group with five goals each.

The derby goal adds to what has been a productive campaign for the Athletic Bilbao captain.

He has now registered two goals and two assists in 11 La Liga appearances this season, continuing to play an important role in his side’s attacking plans.

His understanding with younger brother Nico was again on display, with the pair combining to produce the opening goal against Sociedad.

For Athletic Bilbao supporters, Williams’ contribution carries added significance given the importance of the Basque derby.

And with Oyarzabal now just one goal ahead of him on the all-time 21st-century derby scoring list, Williams has another personal milestone within reach.

For now, his focus will be on helping Athletic Bilbao maintain their momentum as the La Liga season continues.
