Kwame Obeng, a 46-year-old mason, has received a 48-month prison sentence from the Amasaman Circuit Court for stealing 17 cattle worth Gh¢228,000.00.
He reportedly confessed to the crime, stating that he took cattle from a total of 21 animals he was responsible for because his employer did not pay him the agreed salary of Gh¢700.00.
Obeng explained to the court that he acted out of necessity because he had two children to support.
On October 30, he took 21 cattle out to graze but did not come back, which led Mr Evans Bortsie to file a complaint.
Evans Bortsie informed the police about the issue. Police investigations found that Obeng sold 17 animals for Gh¢ 96,000.00, receiving an initial payment of Gh¢ 30,000.00.
The buyer, after realising the cattle were stolen, informed the police and asked Obeng to come and collect the remaining amount. He was taken into custody when he arrived.
