Asokore Mampong: Carpenter lynched over GH¢4,500 theft

Police have launched investigations into the alleged mob killing of a young carpenter at Sabon Zango in the Asokore Mampong Municipality of the Ashanti Region after he was reportedly accused of masterminding the theft of GH¢4,500.

The deceased, identified only as Yussif, believed to be in his twenties, allegedly sustained severe injuries after he was assaulted by a group of young men in the community over accusations that he was behind the missing money.

According to information gathered, the incident occurred after some youth in the area allegedly accused the young carpenter of orchestrating the theft of GH¢4,500.

Rather than reporting the matter to the police, the suspects took the law into their hands, beating to the point of unconscious.

Speaking anonymously to Hamza TV, a sister of the deceased said the family only became aware of the incident after Yussif had already been brutally assaulted and had lost consciousness.

According to her, relatives immediately rushed him to the Manhyia Government Hospital in an effort to save his life.

However, she said they were informed at the facility that there was no available bed to admit him.

The family subsequently transferred him to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) for emergency treatment. Sadly, she disclosed, doctors at KATH confirmed that Yussif had died upon arrival.

The incident has reignited concerns over mob justice and the persistent challenge of “no-bed syndrome” in parts of Ghana’s healthcare system, although authorities have not indicated whether the lack of a bed at the first hospital contributed to his death.

Meanwhile, Chairman Bawa, Chairman of the Ashanti Regional Neighbourhood Watch Committee, confirmed that one suspect, identified as Musah, has been arrested in connection with the alleged killing.

According to him, police are actively searching for 12 other young men believed to have participated in the assault.

The body of the deceased has been deposited at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital Mortuary, where it is awaiting autopsy as part of the police investigation.

Police are expected to continue investigations to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and determine the level of involvement of each suspect.
