Berekum Chelsea travelled to Samraboi and lost 1-0 to Samartex in round 29 of the Ghana Premier League.

En route back home, armed robbers attacked Berekum Chelsea FC, where the team was forced off the bus after the road was blocked.

According to reports, when the driver tried to reverse after seeing the robbers, the attackers continued to advance, forcing several players to flee into the bushes as the robbers opened fire.

The incident reportedly took place on the Goaso road, between Bibiani and a town known as “B-Town”.

Club’s official statement

On our way back to Berekum from Samreboi, our team bus was attacked by a group of armed robbers who blocked the road to prevent our passage.

Masked men with guns and assault rifles started shooting at our bus as the driver tried to reverse. The players and staff fled into nearby bushes to take cover.

Unfortunately, one of our players is badly injured and is receiving medical attention at a nearby hospital, waiting to be transferred to the regional hospital.

We are grateful to the police patrol team for its rapid response, sports journalists who quickly disseminated the information, the town of Ashiresu, which provided temporary shelter for our players and officials of Bibiani Gold Stars, who have offered tremendous support.

We are also grateful to all well-wishers and last but not least the President of the Ghana Football Association for his prompt response in this difficult moment.

We will update the general public as developments unfold, and wish our player God’s speed in his recovery.

Yours faithfully

Berekum Chelsea
