Ghana national under-17 football team wrapped up preparations for the 2026 U-17 Africa Cup of Nations with a narrow 1–0 defeat to Mali national under-17 football team in an international friendly played ahead of the tournament in Morocco.
A second-half strike from the Young Eagles proved decisive in a tightly contested encounter, handing Mali victory as both teams completed their final build-up matches before the start of the continental competition.
Ogum Focused on Positives Despite Defeat
Despite the result, Black Starlets head coach Prosper Narteh Ogum expressed satisfaction with his team’s overall performance and the lessons gained from the high-intensity test.
According to the former Asante Kotoko SC coach, the friendly provided valuable tactical insight and highlighted areas that still require improvement before Ghana begins its AFCON campaign.
“This was the type of test we needed ahead of the AFCON,” Ogum said after the game. “Mali gave us intensity, discipline, and competition at a very high level, and I’m happy with how the boys responded.”
The coach praised his side’s movement, pressing, and composure on the ball, insisting the performance offered encouraging signs despite the defeat.
“We created enough chances to win the game, but sometimes football is like that. What is important for me is the way the boys approached the game, their movement, their pressing, and their confidence on the ball. These are things we can build on heading into the tournament,” he added.
Preparation Over Results
Ogum emphasized that the primary objective of the friendly matches was preparation rather than results, noting that the technical team now has a clearer understanding of the squad ahead of the tournament.
“At this stage, results are secondary to preparation. We have identified a few areas to improve, and that is exactly why these matches are important. I am convinced the team will be ready when the tournament starts,” he stated.
Mixed Friendly Results Before Tournament
The defeat to Mali comes just days after the impressive 4–0 victory over Ivory Coast national under-17 football team in another preparatory fixture.
The contrasting performances have provided the coaching staff with a balanced assessment of the team’s strengths and weaknesses heading into the competition.
Tough Group Awaits Ghana
The two-time African champions face a difficult challenge at the tournament after being drawn in Group D alongside Algeria, Senegal, and South Africa.
The group is widely considered one of the toughest in the competition, with all four nations possessing strong youth football traditions and ambitions of qualifying for the FIFA U-17 World Cup.
U-17 Legacy
Ghana remains one of Africa’s most successful nations at the U-17 level, with the Black Starlets having won the African title twice and producing generations of talented players who progressed to senior international football.
The team also boasts a proud history at the FIFA U-17 World Cup, where Ghana has previously lifted the global title and established itself as a powerhouse in youth football.
