The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Bongo in the Upper East Region, Joseph Abaa Akaseke, has died after a short illness, plunging the district into mourning.
Mr. Akaseke reportedly passed away on Sunday evening, February 22, 2026, while receiving medical care at the Bolgatanga Regional Hospital. Details surrounding the circumstances of his death remain scanty as the family and authorities observe mourning protocols.
The sad development was confirmed by the Upper East Regional Communication Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Jonathan Abdallah Salifu, through a Facebook post. His confirmation followed a visit by regional and constituency party executives, together with Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assembly (MMDA) officials, to commiserate with the bereaved family.
News of Mr. Akaseke’s death has triggered widespread grief across the Bongo District and beyond. Residents, party supporters, and colleagues have described his passing as sudden and heartbreaking, noting that he was still full of energy and ambition for the district’s development.

Mr. Akaseke was appointed DCE in April 2025 and won an overwhelming endorsement from Assembly Members during his confirmation, securing 52 out of 54 valid votes. The landslide approval was widely interpreted as a strong show of confidence in his leadership style and development agenda.
In his acceptance speech at the time, he pledged to pursue inclusive and participatory governance and to work tirelessly to ensure that the Bongo District received its fair share of national development resources.
