Burkina Faso has won the battle against homosexuality after the country’s junta announced that the practice is completely banned in every corner of the country.

The junta unanimously passed a law to criminalise homosexuality, with immediate effect on Tuesday, 2nd September.

A prison sentence of up to five years is the punishment for anyone who is caught as a homosexual.

The measure is part of sweeping reforms to family and citizenship legislation.

It marks a major shift for human rights in the West African nation, where homosexuality had been legal until the junta seized power after two coups in 2022.

Neighbouring Mali enacted a comparable law in 2024. Across Africa, more than 30 countries have banned same-sex relations.

Ghana and Uganda have also tightened their anti-homosexuality laws in recent years despite global criticism.
