It was never going to be long for CAF to kiss the away goal rule goodbye. The away goal rule has caused many pains to many clubs with Ghanaian giants, Kumasi Asante Kotoko, one of the biggest losers of the rule.

Flashback to 2002 when Wydad of Morocco won the CAF Cup Winners Cup via the away goal rule at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium after a 2-2 on aggregate scoreline. It was a very painful experience to the Porcupine Warriors family with many still struggling to get over it.

The continent started discussing the importance of the perennial away goal rule the moment UEFA decided to scrap it in their club competetions a couple of seasons ago.

CAF are seriously thinking of officially getting rid of it starting from the imminent 2024-25 inter-club competitions.

The away goals rule is a method of tiebreaking in association football and when teams play each other twice, once at each team’s home ground.

Under the away goals rule, if the total goals scored by each team are equal, t he team that has scored more goals “away from home” win the tiebreaker.
