Elon Musk’s former wife Justine Wilson says the billionaire ended their daughter Vivian Jenna Wilson’s health insurance one day after she came out as transgender.

Wilson made the allegation in Musk, a new documentary by Oscar-winning filmmaker Alex Gibney examining the personal life and career of the Tesla and SpaceX chief.

She said Musk had told her to reassure Vivian that he would always love her, but claimed that the 22-year-old’s health insurance was cancelled the following day.

Wilson, an author and the mother of six of Musk’s children, is one of the documentary’s main interviewees. The film explores the increasingly strained relationship between Musk and Vivian.

Musk and Wilson married in 2000 and divorced in 2008. Their first son, Nevada, died aged 10 weeks in 2002 from sudden infant death syndrome.

Wilson said in the documentary that difficulties between Musk and Vivian dated back to her childhood. She recalled an incident when Vivian was six, claiming Musk asked her whether she wanted to be a “winner” or a “loser”.

Wilson said she understood the comment to mean Vivian would be viewed as a loser if she did not comply with her father’s wishes.

The relationship has since become a matter of public dispute, with Musk making critical comments about his daughter’s transgender identity.

On X, the social media platform he owns, Musk previously wrote that he had “lost” Vivian to the “woke mind virus”. Wilson said the post had caused her daughter significant emotional distress and accused Musk of making no attempt to rebuild their relationship.

She also criticised what she described as Musk’s reaction to Vivian’s transition, saying he responded as though a child had died.

Wilson said she challenged that comparison by referring to the death of Nevada, telling Musk that the family had experienced the death of a child, while Vivian was alive and growing into her own identity.

Reflecting more broadly on parenthood, Wilson said raising a child successfully eventually meant accepting that the child’s life would no longer centre on the parent.

Musk did not take part in Gibney’s documentary and has dismissed it as a “hit piece”. His legal representative has threatened legal action, alleging the film contains factual distortions.

The documentary lasts approximately four hours and is due to receive a nationwide theatrical release on October 16, after screenings at select cinemas.

Vivian recently discussed artificial intelligence with People in an interview published in September. She was speaking while promoting Desigual’s fall 2026 campaign, titled Born to Disobey.

She argued that artificial intelligence damages artistic expression, saying art communicates human emotion. AI-generated work, she maintained, replaces the intention behind art with what she called plagiarised colours and shapes.
