Emilio Nsue was the hero for Equatorial Guinea in their fairytale trip to the Round 16 of the 2023 AFCON. He also finished as the top scorer of the tournament with 5 goals.

In the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, Emilio Nsue scored both winners for Equatorial Guinea against Namibia and Liberia in their first and second games to put them in contention for a slot in the main tournament to be played in the USA-CANADA-MEXICO.

However, Equatorial Guinea’s wins have been reversed by FIFA zooming them to 5th place in Group H.

Nsue has played for Equatorial Guinea, his fatherland, for the last 11 years and FIFA has decided he was never eligible to represent the nation.

FIFA ruled Nsue, 35, ineligible to play for Equatorial Guinea because he has represented Spain’s various youth teams but disobeyed the warnings and continued to represent them. Nsue did not allow FIFA to give him the green light to commence his Equatorial Guinea journey.

He is now paying the price alongside Equatorial Guinea after FIFA launched an investigation into it in March 2024.

FIFA has subsequently suspended Emilio Nsue from international football for six months after ruling that he was ineligible to play for Equatorial Guinea. Equatoguinean federation (Feguifut) is fined 150,000 Swiss francs (£131,000) in addition to Nsue’s suspension.

Equatorial Guinea must restart their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers once again as they have zero points and a minus of six goals.
