GBA warns against interference with lawyers after EOCO arrest attempt

The Ghana Bar Association (GBA) has criticised the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) over its attempted arrest of Manhyia South MP and lawyer, Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, at the Accra High Court.

The Association said the incident raises concerns about the treatment of lawyers while they are carrying out their professional responsibilities.

It stressed that any enforcement action involving a lawyer representing a client must respect constitutional guarantees, applicable legal procedures and the independence of the legal profession.

“While no individual is above the law, any investigation or enforcement action involving a member of the legal profession, especially when they are representing clients, must be conducted strictly in accordance with constitutional guarantees, applicable legal procedures, and respect for professional independence.”

The GBA warned that actions interfering with lawyers’ ability to perform their duties could create a perception of intimidation and undermine public confidence in the justice system.

The Association also expressed concern over videos circulating on social media in which lawyer Enoch Anhwre Afoakwa complained of being assaulted. EOCO subsequently confirmed that the lawyer had been brought to its office.

The GBA further called on state institutions, including EOCO, to uphold due process, fairness and respect for the rights of persons involved.

“The rule of law demands not only that justice be done, but that it be seen to be done. The independence of the legal profession is a cornerstone of every democratic society and must be protected at all times.”

The incident occurred on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, at the Accra High Court Complex while Baffour Awuah was representing a client.

EOCO said its attempted arrest was connected to an ongoing investigation and that Baffour Awuah had been invited on two occasions in February 2026 to assist with the investigation but failed to honour the invitations.

The Office said it subsequently took steps to secure his attendance in accordance with the law.
