It was a black Saturday in the entire Volta Region as seven SHS students untimely met their death when they tried to cross the Black Volta.

What happened on Saturday?

On Saturday, around 7 to 8 am, 15 students of Lawra SHS cadet on their normal jogging where they cross the Black Volta to Burkina Faso side. Per reports, 10 of the 15 students boarded a canoe with the operator. The canoe capsized due to overloading, where 11 students on board. The operator and three female students, and a male student, were able to swim ashore while the other seven could not.

Rituals were performed by the elders of Dikpe community between 10-11 am where 5 bodies were found, per NADMO boss in Lawra.

GES statement;

The Ministry of Education has expressed its condolences to the families of the seven Lawra Senior High School students who died in a canoe accident on Saturday June 15, 2025, while attempting to cross the Black Volta River.

The Ministry, led by Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, has announced an emergency meeting to address the incident and ensure student safety.
