The Ghana Education Service has come under severe pressure from Ghanaians after failing to assist the newly posted teachers concerning their unpaid 10-month salaries. Newly posted teachers stormed the headquarters of the Ghana Education Service in Accra on Monday to show Ghana how disappointed they are concerning the delays in their salaries.

The government has yet to release any statement to assure the teachers when they will be paid. However, GES released a statement addressing all the issues concerning the unpaid salaries of the newly posted ones.

GES Addresses Concerns of Newly Posted Teachers

Accra, Ghana – June 23, 2025 – In response to the picketing by some newly posted teachers at its Headquarters in the early hours of Monday, June 23, the Ghana Education Service (GES) acknowledges and deeply empathizes with their concerns regarding delays in the issuance of Staff IDs and the payment of salaries. These teachers, who will report to post in September 2024, are a vital part of our educational system, and their welfare is a top priority.

Understanding the Challenge and Ongoing Efforts

The GES wishes to update the affected teachers and the general public on the efforts underway to resolve this situation.

1. Addressing an Inherited Issue: The current GES Management inherited the challenge of an expired financial clearance, which directly impacted the timely processing of these teachers’ salaries. This clearance, which permitted their payment, expired on December 31, 2024.

2. Securing New Provisions: Despite inheriting this situation, GES has been working diligently to secure a new financial clearance. We are pleased to confirm that the Ministry of Finance has made a budgetary provision for these teachers and others in the 2025 National Budget. We are optimistic that the necessary funds will be released soon to facilitate these payments.

3. Collaborative Resolution: To fast-track the resolution process, a technical committee has been formed, including five representatives from the affected teachers. This committee is actively collaborating with GES Management and has already made significant progress.

4. Appeal for Unified Representation: While we are committed to resolving this issue, the GES appeals for coordinated, unified, and consistent representation from the teachers. The frequent emergence of new groups with shifting leadership makes it challenging to track concerns effectively and ensure progress. Consistent representation will greatly streamline our engagement process and accelerate solutions.

5. GES Commitment to Teacher Welfare: The current leadership of GES has made teacher welfare and career progression a top priority since assuming office. We are dedicated to ensuring that all staff are appropriately placed and compensated for their invaluable contributions. To date, over 50,000 teaching and non-teaching staff have received their due promotions, been placed on appropriate salary scales, and are receiving their corresponding entitlements.

6. Work is also ongoing to process the long-overdue promotions of teachers due for the rank of Deputy Director, many of whom have been on the same rank for over ten years. These promotions will be regularised soon.

While we fully understand the frustration of the affected teachers, we respectfully urge their patience and continued cooperation as we work closely with the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Finance to bring this matter to a swift and equitable resolution. The GES remains committed to equity, transparency, and the overall welfare of its staff.

We thank the public for its understanding and assure all stakeholders of our continued dedication to protecting the integrity and dignity of the teaching profession.
