President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to reposition the Ghana Export–Import Bank (GEXIM) to drive agricultural transformation through concessional financing.

Speaking at the launch of the “Feed Ghana Programme” on Saturday, April 12, 2025, in Techiman, Bono East Region, the President emphasized the urgent need for innovative agricultural financing to address long-standing investment challenges in the sector.

“Financing remains one of the key barriers to agricultural investment,” Mahama stated. “To address this, the Exim Bank will be refocused to offer concessional loans to farmers and agricultural enterprises, especially those involved in export and value addition.”

He further revealed that the government will establish agro-processing zones across the country, outfitted with essential infrastructure such as irrigation systems, roads, power, and storage facilities to encourage private investment in agro-processing.

The “Feed Ghana Programme” aims to significantly boost local agricultural production, enhance food security, and reduce the country’s dependency on imported food. The initiative also seeks to provide raw materials for local factories and generate employment opportunities for the youth.

The program includes targeted interventions across key sectors such as vegetables, grains, poultry, tubers, oil palm, and other import substitutes, in a broader effort to transform Ghana into an export-led economy.

Following the launch, Acting CEO of GEXIM, Hon. Sylvester Mensah, reaffirmed the bank’s commitment to the initiative. He stated that GEXIM is well-positioned to support increased food production, agro-processing, and high-impact job creation projects under the Feed Ghana Programme.
