The Ghana Police Service, Ghana Prison Service and the Attorney-General have been sued by lawyer Oliver Baker Vormawor, a human rights activist. They have been sued for  GHC9.9 million in damages.

According to Crime Check TV GH, Kwabena Huletey, a subsistence farmer at Nankese in the Eastern Region, is at the moment battling memory loss, severe lower back pain and hearing loss in his right ear after a wrongful imprisonment for 7 years.

What was his offence?

Mr Huletey’s only offence was his decision to marry a 19-year-old lady despite her suffering from a chronic disease.

Unfortunately, the lady passed on after Huletey had depleted his accounts to seek medical care for her.

Her death led to the arrest of the poor farmer, who was surprisingly charged with murder.

What happened at the law court?

He was put before the Mampong District Court and remanded in prison custody for a year.

The court ordered his release since no case was established against him. According to reports, a police officer returned him to the Koforidua Local prison despite the court’s order. Huletey spent 5 more years without conviction.

What happened when he was in prison?

During his imprisonment, Huletey’s sister, who relied on him for financial support, suddenly suffered a mental breakdown; he also lost his mother without his knowledge and lost connection with his daughter and grandchildren, which he discovered after gaining his freedom through the Justice For All Programme.

What is Oliver Baker Vormawor demanding for Kwabena Huletey?

The Ghana Police Service, Ghana Prison Service, and the Attorney-General have been sued for Ghc 9.9 million in damages by lawyer and human rights activist Oliver Baker Vormawor. So the question is: Why will the policeman send the accused back to prison custody after the court has ordered his release?
