Ghanaians mourn the loss of iconic musician Daddy Lumba

Ghana’s music industry and millions of fans across the world have been plunged into mourning following the death of highlife legend, Charles Kojo Fosu, popularly known as Daddy Lumba.

The 59-year-old music icon passed away on the morning of Saturday, July 26, 2025, after a short illness, according to an official statement released by his family through their legal representatives, Baba Jamal & Associates.

The announcement was made by Fati Ali Yallah, Esq., counsel for the Fosu family, and confirmed that the family is requesting privacy during this difficult time.

Funeral arrangements, the statement said, will be announced in the coming days.

Born on September 29, 1964, in Nsuta Amangoase in the Ashanti Region, Daddy Lumba began his illustrious music career in the early 1980s.

After relocating to Germany, he formed the Lumba Brothers with his longtime friend Nana Acheampong, with whom he released his first album Yɛɛyɛ Aka Akwantuo Mu in 1989.

That debut launched what would become one of the most celebrated solo careers in Ghanaian music history.

Over the span of more than three decades, Daddy Lumba released over 30 albums, many of which became instant classics.

His unmistakable voice and lyrical mastery explored themes of love, heartbreak, societal issues, spirituality, and resilience. Hits like Aben Wɔ Ha, Theresa, Makra Mo, Playboy, and Dangerous became staples in Ghanaian homes, weddings, and celebrations, cementing his place as a cultural treasure.

But Lumba’s influence extended beyond his music. He was a trailblazer in branding, style, and showmanship, inspiring generations of musicians. He mentored and collaborated with numerous young artists and remained relevant in an ever-evolving music industry.

Despite battling chronic health challenges in recent years, Daddy Lumba continued to perform and produce music, with his last public performance held in December 2024 during a sold-out concert in Accra.

Throughout his career, Daddy Lumba was not without controversy, often making headlines for his lyrical boldness, political innuendos, and personal feuds.

Yet, none of these could overshadow his enduring legacy as one of Ghana’s most talented, influential, and beloved artists.
